RETURNING TO ITHACA

'When you start on your journey to Ithaca, then
pray that the road is long, full of adventure,
full of knowledge.'
-Constantine Kavafis, Ithaka

Returning to Ithaca,
on a road with no name,
in a barn newly-raised,
from the stairs of a hayloft,
I witnessed a seance, full
of fog and remembrance,
sacred histories recalled,
strange connections divined,
lost spirits invoked,
as the past sang out
round a circle of voices,
in tongues unmistakable,
of mystical times,
collating together last
packets of memory, still
wondering, with wonder,
how a distant explosion,
like the day of creation,
hurtles you onward
through starfields of life.
