BACK TO BASICS

When the vandalism ends,
and nary a student wastes the free-time
 they no longer have,
When the school averages 750 on the
 College Boards,
and not one student fails to hand in
 his homework (and well-written yet!),
Perhaps then,
             finally,
we will have time to address
the comotose spirit, the serious absence of passion, the meager
         crumbs of social concern.
Perhaps then, we will ask students
as a last requirement for graduation:
"What do you plan to do to make this a
              more just world?"
We will then have time to worry
if we have gotten far enough back
 to that particular basic.
