AUTUMN FRAGMENTS

I:
THE DAY I SPENT A YEAR
IN LYNDONVILLE, VT.

This is the day that...

the sun shone,
the clouds covered,
the air warmed,
the wind chilled,
the rain fell,
the hail pelted,
the foliage blazed,
the snow whitened,

all at least twice.

II:
TOO MUCH

Oranges,
reds,
yellows,

brilliant!

Then the snow came,
              powdering the
        trees.
Another color.

Oh my gawd!

III:
AND STILL I LOVE IT...

Across New Hampshire, wall-to-wall
                   and hill-to-hill, a carpet so
        tacky you'd never buy it
                                  for your home,
a rug so garish it peels
   your eyelids back and
                 drops your jaw.
