BALLET D'HERON

An audience is watching as a

heron stalks the shoreline, like a skater

               gliding dream-like across a sheet

of ice or a ballerina

               preparing to leap high above

      the stage, so controlled,

so studied, as if every movement

were a matter of life or death,

which it is, in this slow motion dance

             of mayhem and

                                 discord on the banks

                        of the Concord
