A MAN OF THE WORLD

Eager to share the details of my trip some years before,
I asked the energetic young lawyer
where she came from in Vietnam.

I’m Korean, she says.

Two days sitting in a New York City diner on 76th St., waiting for my eggs,
FB messaging in real time with a Cambodian
                        student in Battambang Province,

and eager to share the story of my family’s roots,
I speak a few words of Russian to my waitress.
Puzzled, she looks at me and asks what I said.
Proudly, I show her I know the meaning.

            I’m Greek, she says.

It’s been a rough week.
