WARP & WEFT

What happened to the pattern in our new Afghan rug?
Why did the motif go missing, just barely begun, its geometry
erased like a mountain in fog?

Did it get burned up in the blaze of red and orange threads?
Did the weaver fall over her shuttle, exhausted, a life tied into knots?
Did the little boy riding his donkey to fetch supplies forget
the skeins of black wool? (O, how his father scolded him!)
Did a drone strike in Faryab Province spare one small rug, the sole
stunned witness of a shattered loom?
Shh! Our new rug is trying to speak before it bursts into flame.

Meaning is woven into design, but what lies in interruption?
