SHOCK AND AWE

Leaving school last Friday, late,
           the parking lot
                         before me,
                I slammed into
        a sunset sky, suspended high
                 above those new buildings
                              going up,

  great spreading slabs of
          glowing pink, streaked
      through with
wispy stripes
                 of gray,
and there I sat in shock and awe,
             and stared with eyes burned
      bloodshot red,
          'till turning left on
                    Lincoln
                Road

I heard
        the bombs
on NPR
      exploding
            over
                 Baghdad.
