NEVER HANDS-FREE
I remember a photograph,
      a few wars back, of
two friends in Vietnam,
         young men, walking
   down a road hand-in-hand,
and I thought back to
      it yesterday on
Washington St., watching
       two young women,
                  side-by-side,
each with hand to ear,
  speaking on cellphones
      to other friends holding
   other cellphones
            speaking to still other
    friends with cellphones, and I
thought to myself, "I wish they'd

            use call waiting to take
each other's call first, to hear
                 the longing, and not wait
            until the conversation
      is over to

                hold hands.
