THEY AREN'T JUST NUMBERS.
IT ISN'T JUST MEASUREMENT

Numbers,

   not the instruments,

                             but the very music

we dance to, and oh how we started

      to step lively when they

invented the minute-hand, and jumped into a jig with

             the second-hand that soon

followed, then vibrating  quartz cleaving

slim seconds into tenths and hundredths

which set us to a techno beat,

                            with waltzes turned foxtrots turned

               Charlestons turned tangos turned twists,

and the dance floor buckled and we stirred like a hive, and

had so much fun until we collapsed, exhausted

by this simple division of numbers,  lives

carried out to decimal points, all done

because it could be done, and we

longed only for our body's beat, that beloved heart beat,

a rhythm we knew, so that

we might live out our lives in a

   world  we know.
