THOUGHTS WHILE GAZING OUT
ON HARMON’S HARBOR,
GEORGETOWN ISLAND, MAINE

For Lisa & Kevin on their wedding day

On this august fourth August day,
We combed the beach for words to say,
And settled on the metaphor
Found on every Maine isle and shore.

As you pull together on life’s oar,
Remember the surf’s ceaseless roar,
And consider the pounding of the cliffs
By tides and waves–just Nature’s riffs.

When the storms abate the rocks are there,
Glistening, solid, no worse for wear.
May this wedding bond protect your shore
From all Down East gales that find your door,

And bring you only shafts of light,
of joy, love, friendship, and delight.
