When the calamity came,
a community responded,
where a tsunami rose a school
tried to turn the tide
by con-spiring, by breathing
together, by joining hearts
with those who survived
and remembering those who
perished, by finding many
ways to say, "We care,"
which might mean throwing
change into a jar or dodging
a ball, harmonizing a capella-
style or singing to a tough cafe
crowd, baking cakes, raffling
tickets, tattooing with
henna, selling cookie dough
knocking on a neighbor's
door, hitting up parents.
preparing a lunch, playing
hockey, or by learning about
a place still called Aceh
and extending a hand, by
bringing the Tsunami home,
all of which are ways
to spell love in a
battered world.
